Arenal Volcano

One of the more famous volcanoes in Costa Rica, Arenal is located in the northern part of the country and is still considered active. It is surrounded by Arenal National Park and offers stunning views of its cone-shaped peak, as well as hot springs and other natural attractions.

Poas Volcano

Located in central Costa Rica, Poas is another active volcano that is part of a national park. Visitors can hike to the rim of the crater and look down into its steaming, turquoise-colored lake. The park also has several hiking trails and a visitor center with exhibits about the volcano and its history.

Irazu Volcano

The highest volcano in Costa Rica, Irazu is located in the eastern part of the country and is considered active but currently dormant. It boasts two main craters, one of which contains a green sulfuric lake. Visitors can drive up to the summit and hike around the craters, as well as enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

Turrialba Volcano

Located in the central-eastern part of Costa Rica, Turrialba is also considered active but currently dormant. It has erupted sporadically in recent years, and its last major eruption was in 2016. Visitors can hike around the base of the volcano and see evidence of its past eruptions, including lahar flows and ash deposits.

Rincon de la Vieja Volcano

Located in the northwest part of the country, Rincon de la Vieja is part of a national park and features several craters, hot springs, and other volcanic activity. Visitors can hike through the park’s trails to see mud pots, fumaroles, and other geothermal features.

Costa Rica has over 200 volcanic formations, with some active volcanoes still spewing smoke, steam, and lava. They offer breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes, and some even have hot springs for visitors to soak in. The Tenorio volcano and surroundings are famous for one of Costa Rica’s most beautiful rivers and waterfalls at Rio Celeste.
